About the project

Kūkan is a Japanese concept and idea of space.

It can be understood as a space with a defined framework that gives it shape and dimension. Something we can physically measure. At the same time, it is also a field of emptiness that emerges between objects, bodies, or thoughts. One interpretation sees space as something that holds and supports; another understands it as something that opens and expands. These perspectives intertwine and coexist. It is through this multilayered understanding that kūkan becomes a living, ever-changing space.

Through mutual support and collaboration, the two performers open up possibilities of movement that did not exist before. On a custom-designed set piece that challenges balance and forces the body into constant negotiation, they explore how kūkan stops being merely a philosophical concept and transforms into a practical test of space. The performance embraces limitation as a deliberate challenge.

On a small concrete block, a relationship unfolds that reveals the moment when a boundary becomes a possibility.
